Synopsis
“Truth Against Power” is a documentary film about the battle for democracy in Venezuela. For one year we follow political leader, now escaped political prisoner, Leopoldo López, as he runs for, and then is disqualified to run for, Mayor of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. At stake is not just the electoral future of an individual, but the democratic future of a nation. Both an intimate portrayal of a historical figure and a high stakes political thriller, the story of Leopoldo’s disqualification reverberates in the geo-politics of today. The film is witness to the fight of democracy against authoritarianism and provides a first hand view of history unfolding.
Filmmaker
David Chalker is an award winning director and cinematographer. As writer/director his short film “Hypocrite” garnered several festival awards and was broadcast on PBS. As a cinematographer he shot the film “Secuestro Express”, a modern classic in Venezuela known for its visual style. “Truth Against Power” is his directorial feature debut.
